Marina Barcenilla

Marina Barcenilla began her perfume brand on 6 June 2011, when she launched The Perfume Garden in the West Country as an artisan perfumery focused on traditional perfume-making; she was its founder and perfumer. In 2016, after India won the Fragrance Foundation UK Award for Best New Independent Fragrance, the business was renamed Marina Barcenilla Parfums. Its creative identity is grounded in nature-derived perfumery, personal experiences and short stories accompanying the fragrances, reflecting Barcenilla’s aim of helping people rediscover perfume’s soul. India and Black Osmanthus are documented fragrance milestones for the brand: Black Osmanthus won the Fragrance Foundation UK Award for Independent Fragrance in 2017. From 2019 to 2021, Barcenilla paused fragrance work for space-science PhD research, then returned to perfumery and became an Academician of Spain’s Fundación Academia del Perfume in 2021. Her later practice also links natural perfumery with science communication through AromAtom, a separate project creating Solar System-related olfactory concepts for educational and cultural settings.
