Marks & Spencer
Marks & Spencer began in 1884, when Michael Marks opened a Penny Bazaar stall at Kirkgate Market in Leeds. The Marks & Spencer name was established on 28 September 1894, after Michael Marks formed a partnership with Thomas Spencer. The business evolved from Penny Bazaar stalls into a textile-focused chain, introduced Food in 1931, and by 1956 sold virtually all products under its own brand. Its own-label identity was formalized through the St Michael trademark, registered in 1928 for products made exclusively for M&S. After more than a century of family ownership, the company floated in 1973. In 2014, Food and Clothing were brought under the Only M&S identity, followed by the Est. 1884 logo in 2015. Today, M&S is a British retailer spanning Food, Fashion, Home & Beauty, and Bank & Services. In fragrance, Sea Salt & Neroli is a best seller and a defining example of its offering, while own-brand fragrance sales grew within Beauty in the year ended 29 March 2025.
