Maroma

Maroma began in 1976 in Auroville, South India, as a small incense-making initiative started by young Auroville pioneers, with Paul Pinthon among its founding figures. From the outset, the enterprise aimed to make natural incense while providing financial support for Auroville’s development. Laura Reddy joined Pinthon in the early 1980s, and her background in communication, design, and aromatherapy helped shape Maroma’s identity and expansion. Originally known as Encens d’Auroville, the business evolved from incense into home fragrances and later body-care products; the original name remains attached to its flagship incense line. Maroma is not individually owned but operates as a unit of Aravinda Trust. In 1994, it began contributing money to Auroville schools and the Matrimandir. The brand reports national Fair Trade certification in 2010, international certification through the World Fair Trade Organization in 2012, and WFTO membership since 2015. Encens d’Auroville, which began with twelve fragrances, is described as Maroma’s signature incense. Its work continues to connect fragrance-based home and body care with Auroville, natural or herbal ingredients, environmental responsibility, fair trade, and community benefit.
