Masque
Masque was founded on April 1, 2010, by Alessandro Brun, a Milan-born professor with research in luxury-goods management, and Riccardo Tedeschi, an engineer and MBA graduate, after the two had researched scents and essences in Grasse and worked with Italian artisans. The project initially began as Masque Cosmetics; about a year later, the founders shifted their emphasis to the Opera fragrances. In 2013, Masque Fragranze emerged as a theatrical fragrance project, organizing creations into acts and scenes and assigning briefs to young perfumers. Masque’s creative language draws on opera, theater, Italian cultural references, and narrative, with each scent representing a place, personality, memory, event, or dream. The Opera Collection is divided into four acts: Experiences, Interior Monologues, Sentimental Relationships, and Dreams. White Whale, in the Dreams act, takes inspiration from the open ocean and Moby-Dick imagery and was listed among the Institute for Art and Olfaction’s 2023 Independent Perfume finalists. Brun, whose direction shaped Masque’s collaborative model with named perfumers, died in February 2024. The founders also launched Milano Fragranze in 2020.
