Mattel
Founded in 1945 as a garage-based company originally called Mattel Creations, Mattel began as a toy maker and grew into a global play and family-entertainment company built around owned and licensed intellectual property. Barbie, introduced in 1959, became the flagship of its dolls portfolio, while Hot Wheels joined its vehicle portfolio in 1968. Mattel broadened its holdings through acquisitions including Fisher-Price in 1993 and Tyco Toys in 1997. Its 1999 merger with The Learning Company marked an unsuccessful move into consumer software; Mattel decided to dispose of that segment in 2000. Today, the publicly traded company operates across toys, film, television, licensing, publishing, and digital play. The 2023 Barbie film extended Mattel’s public brand identity into film-led entertainment and partnership activity, with a record-setting opening and more than 100 related partnerships. Mattel’s current identity centers on products and experiences designed to entertain audiences and support children’s development through play.
