Maya Njie

Maya Njie Perfumes was founded in 2016 by Maya Njie, who was born in Sweden, grew up in Västerås, moved to London in her late teens, and studied surface design at the University of the Arts before moving from visual design and photography into perfumery. A self-taught perfumer, Njie combines raw materials, essential oils, aroma compounds, and resins with visual references from her family history. The brand translates intimate memories into scent, drawing on Njie’s Swedish and Gambian heritage and family photographs from the 1960s and 1970s. Its fragrance work began with a five-scent launch in 2016: Nordic Cedar was Njie’s first formulation, while later work included Voyeur Verde, inspired by holidays in southern Spain and a photograph of nature reclaiming an abandoned car. By 2019, Liberty had begun stocking the brand after encountering Vanilj on a makeup artist; Vanilj was the fragrance through which Liberty first discovered Maya Njie.
