Meleg Perfumes
Meleg Perfumes is a Vancouver-based fragrance brand centered on Matthew Meleg, a self-taught perfumer and its owner. The brand developed over five years: four spent learning and refining scent-mixing skills, followed by a year of officially selling perfumes. Meleg began by ordering essential oils and training himself to analyze and record their smells and duration, later supplementing that study with online education and the Basenotes forum. His decade living in Japan shaped the brand’s creative outlook through an appreciation of Japanese artisanship, detail, culture, and travel; its fragrances also draw on history and traditional craftsmanship. Meleg describes the perfumes as personal stories, while their subjects include culture, history, sexuality, and his experience of PTSD. He makes every perfume by hand in Canada, giving the brand a founder-led, artisan-focused identity. The first bottle he sold was Civet Cat Chypre, an animal-inspired musk built around woods, flowers, mosses, and wild accords. Across the collection, independent coverage identifies a resinous, potent, and bold style with an affinity for vintage French perfume.
