Fragrance house
Micallef
Micallef was founded in Grasse, France, in 1996 by Martine Micallef and her husband, Geoffrey Nejman. Martine brought experience running a beauty salon and an artistic practice to the house, while Geoffrey came from banking; they later worked with perfumer Jean-Claude Astier on its fragrances. Micallef’s identity joins perfume with visual art: Martine designs the flacons, and the house presents its fragrances as sensory works of art, with hand decoration and treatments involving crystal, gold, and other artisanal details. Its early work focused on oriental-style fragrances before broadening into floral, gourmand, solar, woody, and spicy styles. Geoffrey Nejman has said the house was among the first international perfume houses to pair oud with French-style compositions. Mon Parfum, originally created for Martine’s personal use, became the house’s best seller after repeated requests for it. Ylang in Gold is also described as an icon of the house. In 2023, a new generation took the reins, with the family continuing the founders’ independent and artistic approach.
