Ministry of Sound
Ministry of Sound was founded in 1991 by Justin Berkmann after he encountered New York’s Paradise Garage, with a founding vision centered on sound, inclusivity, and the dancefloor. The club opened on 21 September 1991 at 103 Gaunt Street in Elephant and Castle, London, as an alcohol-free indoor rave in a former bus depot. Ministry of Sound Recordings launched in 1993 as an extension of the South London nightclub, building a recorded-music business around dance music, artist development, and curated compilations. By its twentieth anniversary, the organization had grown from an underground New York-style club into a wider clubbing brand with international offshoots and a record label. Sony Music UK acquired Ministry of Sound Recordings outright on 10 August 2016, including its artists, back catalogue, and compilations business; Ministry of Sound Group retained the publishing business and continued operating the nightclub. Its public creative identity remains rooted in sound-first club culture, an egalitarian dancefloor, multi-genre programming, and support for established and emerging artists. In 2008, the brand also entered fragrance through the Nightlife scents for Her and for Him.
