Moncler

Founded in 1952 in Monestier-de-Clermont, a mountain village near Grenoble, Moncler began with René Ramillon and André Vincent; its name abbreviates the village’s name. In its early years, the company made quilted sleeping bags, a lined hooded cape, and tents for high-altitude mountain workers. Its outerwear accompanied the 1954 Italian Karakoram expedition associated with the ascent of K2 and a 1955 French expedition that reached Makalu. In 1968, Moncler became official supplier to the French downhill ski team at the Grenoble Winter Olympics and adopted its cockerel logo. During the 1980s, the quilted puffer moved from the slopes into urban life, becoming associated with Italy’s Paninari youth subculture. Remo Ruffini acquired Moncler in 2003 and oversaw its creative direction as the brand moved into luxury while retaining its mountain heritage. Moncler launched Gamme Rouge in 2006, Gamme Bleu with Thom Browne in 2009, and the multi-designer Genius project in 2018. The Stone Island acquisition, finalized on March 31, 2021, created the Moncler Group. Moncler entered fragrance in 2021 with Moncler Pour Femme and Moncler Pour Homme; in January 2024, Les Sommets Moncler was announced as a collection of five unisex fragrances and home-fragrance products.
