Myrurgia

Myrurgia was founded in Barcelona in 1916 by Esteve Monegal i Prat as a family perfumery business. A sculptor, Monegal took charge of the enterprise’s artistic and commercial direction, shaping its bottles, labels, packaging, and advertising, while Eduard Jener contributed Art Deco graphics. The company developed national and international presence through colognes, perfumes, and soaps combining oriental, Hispanic-exotic, and hedonistic themes. In Spain, Myrurgia became strongly associated with Art Deco, and some of its perfumes remained on the market throughout the twentieth century. Its early fragrance lines, introduced around 1918, included classical, oriental, and Spanish-themed creations such as Maderas de Oriente and Maja. First introduced in 1918 and reintroduced in 1945, Maja is identified in perfume-history references as perhaps the house’s best-known fragrance; Madrid’s History Museum describes the associated La Maja image as the brand’s most emblematic.
