Nickelodeon

Nickelodeon launched nationally on April 1, 1979, as a children’s cable television channel created by Warner Communications, with programming aimed at children, adolescents, and their families. In the 1980s and 1990s, its television identity broadened through Nick-at-Nite, introduced in 1985 as a general-audience service, and original animated programming associated with the Nicktoons label in the early 1990s. Nickelodeon moved beyond television into film during the mid-1990s, producing its first feature film, Harriet the Spy, in 1996. The brand now spans television programming and production, consumer products, digital media, location-based experiences, publishing, and feature films. CBS and Viacom reunited in December 2019 to create ViacomCBS, later renamed Paramount Global, placing Nickelodeon in the combined company’s portfolio. On August 7, 2025, affiliates of the Ellison family and RedBird Capital Partners acquired National Amusements, Paramount Global’s controlling stockholder; Paramount and Skydance became wholly owned subsidiaries of Paramount Skydance Corporation, and Nickelodeon remained in the resulting Paramount portfolio.
