Nomenclature was founded in New York in 2015 by Karl Bradl and Carlos Quintero, whose complementary backgrounds joined Bradl’s fragrance experience with Quintero’s work in fashion, publishing, packaging, and design. Bradl had operated the New York niche-fragrance boutique Aedes Perfumery since 1995, and the two founders met around 2009 before developing Nomenclature. The brand’s identity centers on synthetic aroma molecules as important building blocks of modern perfumery, presenting their creative and historical role through contemporary compositions. The project evolved from an initial layering-product idea into a minimalist line conceived as an archive of man-made aroma chemicals and molecules that changed modern perfumery. Quintero originated the concept of celebrating design in fragrance chemistry, while Bradl led fragrance development, with the founders collaborating on the line’s design. Nomenclature made its first appearance at Pitti Fragranze in 2015. It is especially known for its molecule-centered fragrance concept and collection.
