Nopalera

Nopalera was created by Sandra Velasquez in 2019 and launched in 2020 during the pandemic from her Brooklyn apartment, initially with nopal-based bath and body products. Velasquez founded the brand to celebrate Mexican heritage and create a Spanish-language, Latina-centered premium beauty identity in a market she viewed as predominantly European in its cultural references. The nopal, or prickly pear cactus, is Nopalera’s central symbolic and formulation reference, presented as a resilient plant rooted in Mexican culture and heritage. Velasquez’s earlier work as the lead singer and songwriter of the Latin Alternative band Pistolera informed the cultural and activist perspective she brought to Nopalera. The brand evolved from a hand-produced bath-and-body startup into a broader Mexican beauty and lifestyle brand spanning fragrance, hair care, body care, and candles; a 2024 interview described it as scent-forward. Its fragrance collection comprises three signature scents inspired by memories, rituals, landscapes, and traditions rooted in Mexican culture. One example is Dulce de Cuerpo, a smoky fragrance associated with Mexico City and Pueblos Mágicos and centered on copal, vanilla, sandalwood, amber, and violet. Nopalera also appeared on Shark Tank Season 14, where Velasquez declined the offered deal.
