Ocean Pacific

Ocean Pacific began as a surfboard label in the 1960s and became an apparel brand in 1972, when surfer and shaper Jim Jenks developed clothing for surfers’ lives in and out of the water. Industry accounts credit Jenks’s color and design sensibility with shaping the brand’s early identity; its corduroy shorts became a defining apparel item. By the early 1980s, Ocean Pacific had expanded from surf shops into mainstream department stores and had become a major California lifestyle-apparel brand. Its identity broadened through graphic T-shirts and casual clothing while retaining associations with surfing, skateboarding, and water sports. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 1992 amid long-term debt problems, disrupting its original corporate history. Ocean Pacific’s heritage remains rooted in Southern California surf and skate culture, and the brand marked its 50th anniversary in 2022.
