Oscar de la Renta

Oscar de la Renta began his signature ready-to-wear label in New York in 1965, after working at Elizabeth Arden, and the label took his name alone in 1966. In 1969, Richton International bought the business; de la Renta reclaimed ownership in 1973 and named it Oscar de la Renta Limited. The house’s design identity centers on feminine design, artisanal detail, lavish textiles, vibrant color, and craftsmanship informed by European couture standards. In 1992, de la Renta became the first American designer to head a Parisian couture house when he was appointed to design haute couture and ready-to-wear for Pierre Balmain, a role he held until 2003. He died in October 2014; shortly before his death, he selected Peter Copping as his successor, and Copping became creative director before leaving in July 2016. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia became co-creative directors that year, and in September 2025 they were reported to be stepping down after nine years, with final collections expected for pre-fall and autumn/winter 2026. In 2013, Inter Parfums acquired certain fragrance-division assets and entered a worldwide exclusive license for the brand’s perfumes and cosmetics. Oscar, launched in 1977, is the house’s defining fragrance and received the Fragrance Foundation Perennial Success Award in 1991.
