Paul Mitchell
Paul Mitchell is a professional hair-care brand whose early identity centered on salon distribution, stylist education, and Paul Mitchell’s Hair Sculpting Lotion and styling technique. Paul Mitchell Systems changed its corporate name to John Paul Mitchell Systems on May 9, 1985. After Paul Mitchell died in 1989, John Paul DeJoria continued building the company alone. The brand’s public identity emphasizes support for stylists and salon owners, family ownership, and opposition to animal testing. Its Hawaiian roots date to 1983, when it established an awapuhi farm whose ingredient is used in Paul Mitchell products. Tea Tree Special Shampoo was sufficiently popular that the company launched the Tea Tree product line in 2000, and the company identifies the shampoo as its number-one best-selling product based on 2024 worldwide sales through authorized points of purchase and professional distribution. The company remains family-owned, with John Paul DeJoria and Angus Mitchell, Paul Mitchell’s son, identified as co-owners in 2020.
