Fragrance house

Paul Poiret

Paul Poiret founded his Paris couture house in 1903. His designs used fabric draped directly on the body, straight-line construction, and uncorseted silhouettes, marking a significant change in modern dressmaking. From before World War I until the house closed, his creative identity drew on theatrical and Orientalizing references, including the Ballets Russes, harem trousers, and lampshade tunics. In 1911, he extended the business into fragrance with Parfums de Rosine, named for his eldest daughter, alongside the decorative-arts enterprise Martine, linking fashion, fragrance, and interiors. Parfums de Rosine is the defining fragrance collection associated with the historical house, with releases recorded from 1911 to 1919. Its fragrance identity included Nuit de Chine, launched in 1913. The couture house closed in 1929 as postwar fashion favored greater utility, simplicity, and rationality. Shinsegae International acquired the Paul Poiret trademark rights in 2015, the label returned to the runway in 2018 under Yiqing Yin, and Shinsegae launched POIRET as a contemporary luxury beauty brand in 2021.
