Paul Smith
Paul Smith began in 1970 with a small shop in Nottingham. The brand presented its first menswear collection in Paris in 1976 and opened its first London shop, on Floral Street in Covent Garden, in 1979. Its design language has been described as an idiosyncratic take on traditional British styling—“classics with a twist”—informed by British traditions, travel, art, music, and unexpected imagery. Womenswear arrived in 1993, the same year Smith took over the bankrupt workwear company R. Newbold and incorporated its cuts into the collection. The company has remained independent since its founding, with Sir Paul Smith identified as its designer and owner, and it marked its 50th anniversary in 2020. Smith was knighted in 2000, the year Paul Smith Men and Paul Smith Women fragrances launched. In 2007, Paul Smith Rose drew on the scent of a rose cultivated as a birthday gift for Smith, with Antoine Maisondieu working on the composition.
