Perry Ellis
Perry Ellis launched his first collection, Portfolio, in 1976 and began designing under his own name in 1978. His design identity centered on relaxed American sportswear, practical clothing for everyday life, and experimentation with patterns, colors, shapes, and proportions. Menswear followed in 1980, and Perry Ellis America, a denim and activewear collaboration with Levi Strauss, arrived in 1984. The 1982 “Chariots of Fire” collection established what became known as the Ellis look. Ellis died in 1986 at age 46; contemporary reporting credited his casual sportswear with influencing American fashion and encouraging a more relaxed attitude to dress. In 1988, Marc Jacobs became the designer of Perry Ellis womenswear, with the company selecting him to bring coherence to its collections. Supreme International acquired Perry Ellis in 1999 and subsequently became Perry Ellis International. A 2018 transaction made the company privately held. The brand released its first fragrance in 1984, while the 360° and Red fragrance families are identified as iconic, classic year-round best-sellers.
