Philosophy

Founded by Cristina Carlino in 1996, Philosophy began as a skincare brand and later expanded into fragrance, bath and body, and color cosmetics. The Carlyle Group acquired Philosophy in 2007, and Coty announced an agreement in November 2010 to acquire it; as of June 30, 2025, Coty’s filing continued to report Philosophy as a Coty trademark. The brand’s formulation identity centers on dermatologic research, patented formulas and active ingredients, efficacy without irritation, and feel-good textures. Since 2014, its Hope & Grace initiative has supported community-based mental-health efforts and distributed grants to organizations addressing mental-health issues. Amazing Grace, introduced in 1996 as Philosophy’s first fragrance, is especially defining for its fragrance identity and was a global bestseller and award-winner. Philosophy’s fragrance style is clean, classic, and close-wearing, intended for personal self-expression rather than projection.
