Pierre Cardin
Pierre Cardin founded his own fashion house in Paris in 1950, after working with Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli, and presented its first women’s haute couture collection in 1953. In 1954, he created the bubble dress and opened his first women’s haute couture boutique at 118 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré. He entered ready-to-wear in 1959 with a show at Printemps. From the 1960s onward, the house’s creative identity was associated with geometric forms, experimental materials, unisex fashion, and futuristic Space Age references. Cardin extended the name through licensing agreements into accessories, jewelry, perfumes, furniture, and tableware, while his wider work included the unisex Cosmocorps range, stage costumes for the Beatles, and haute couture presentations in Beijing and Shanghai in 1979. His first men’s perfume, Pour Monsieur, launched in 1972, followed by Choc, his first women’s fragrance, in 1981; the lock-shaped Pour Monsieur bottle was displayed at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In January 2022, the House presented COSMOCORPS 3022 and later returned to the Paris fashion-week calendar after a long absence.
