Pixar

Pixar originated in 1979, when George Lucas recruited Ed Catmull to lead Lucasfilm’s Computer Division. In 1986, Steve Jobs purchased the division from Lucas and established it as the independent company Pixar. Its early development combined computer-graphics research with animated shorts: Luxo Jr. marked John Lasseter’s directorial debut, while Tin Toy became the first computer-animated film to receive an Academy Award. A 1991 agreement with Disney to make and distribute a computer-generated animated movie led Pixar to begin work on Toy Story, released on November 22, 1995 as the world’s first computer-animated feature film. Pixar’s creative identity emphasizes original, emotionally truthful storytelling and treats technology as a tool for filmmaking, supported by systems including RenderMan and OpenUSD. After Disney’s acquisition, Pixar remained a distinct creative studio within Disney. In 2024, Pixar received an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Science and Engineering Award for the design and engineering of Universal Scene Description technology.
