Plisson
Established in Paris in 1808, Plisson grew from tabletterie and brushmaking around the modern shaving brush. Its early identity was tied to shaving instruments and Napoleonic-era grooming rituals; Napoleon was among its early clients, and the eagle emblem associated with him became a defining visual mark, registered in 1912. By the mid-19th century, brushmaking was its core craft, expressed through bristle selection, hand assembly, and density. Plisson patented a shaving brush in 1855, developed further inventions including an unbreakable bowl in 1899, and received recognition at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. During the 20th century, it diversified into toothbrushes, manicure sets, travel kits, makeup brushes, and skincare, with its first skincare collections appearing in the 1980s. After being sold to Breton brushmaker Max Sauer in the 1990s, Plisson was acquired in 2019 by Isabelle George-Villeneuve and Thomas Villeneuve, who became majority owners. In September 2025, it introduced Collection 1808, its first niche-fragrance collection, under Thomas Villeneuve’s artistic direction. Its fragrance heritage also includes the cedar-and-sandalwood scent of its historic shaving soap and after-shave ritual.
