Poesie
Poesie was established in 2015 by Joelle Nealy, who began making perfume after a do-it-yourself kit led her to experiment with aroma materials; following work as a nonprofit executive director, she decided to pursue perfumery professionally. Nealy is the brand’s perfumer and owner. Poesie builds its identity around books, tea, and nerdy subjects, with perfumes intended for people of any gender identity, race, religion, body, or age. Its name reflects Nealy’s view that smell and poetry can connect directly with memory and emotion, with the French form chosen for aesthetic reasons. The business makes small-batch perfume and tea, blending and filling each bottle by hand, while its creative process combines fragrance families and accords to create scents that tell a story. In its fragrance history, Innocence, from the Fall 2015 Dark & Stormy collection inspired by Gothic fiction, is one of the oldest scents in the permanent collection. The Spring 2023 Wild Fey collection includes Titania, one of the permanent collection’s relatively few floral scents.
