Porsche Design

Founded in Stuttgart in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and his brother Hans-Peter, Porsche Design was created to extend Porsche’s design principles beyond automobiles. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche had previously designed the Porsche 911, and the young brand translated automotive design principles into functional everyday objects, expressing a design language centered on function-led form, purism, durability, technological innovation, and essential elements. Its first major product, the Chronograph I wristwatch, appeared that same year, drawing on the low-reflection instruments of the 911 and racing cockpits; 50,000 examples were sold, and it was described as the studio’s founding bestseller and a continuing design symbol. The Porsche Design Studio moved from Stuttgart to Zell am See, Austria, in 1974. In 2003, Porsche AG and Porsche Design Management pooled accessory, clothing, sports-equipment, and retail activities into Porsche Lifestyle GmbH & Co. KG; in 2017, Porsche’s lifestyle activities were integrated more closely with its automotive business, with the group’s fundamental strategy presented as unaffected. Porsche Design’s fragrance history began in 2008 with The Essence, identified as the line’s initial defining launch and later described as an icon.
