Primark
Primark began in 1969, when Arthur Ryan opened its first store on Mary Street in Dublin, Ireland, trading as Penneys with financing from Associated British Foods. The brand still trades as Penneys in Ireland, while its international business uses the Primark name after a trademark conflict involving the American retailer JC Penney. Its first English store opened in Derby in 1974, followed by its first store outside the United Kingdom and Ireland, in Madrid, in 2006. Primark opened its first United States store in Boston in 2015. Today, it is an international fashion retailer focused on affordable fashion and everyday essentials, with beauty, homeware and accessories also part of its offer. In 2021, it launched Primark Cares, a sustainability strategy covering fashion waste, value-chain carbon emissions and the livelihoods of people making its products. In May 2024, Primark introduced a refreshed visual identity featuring a new Portal device, updated logo, refreshed blue colour and specially designed font. On 21 April 2026, Associated British Foods announced plans to demerge Primark from its Food business, subject to approvals and tax clearances, with completion intended before the end of 2027.
