Queen Latifah
Queen Latifah, born Dana Owens in Newark, New Jersey, began recording with a demo in 1988 and released her debut album, All Hail the Queen, in 1989. Her creative identity evolved from pioneering hip-hop work into 1990s acting, an Academy Award-nominated performance in Chicago in 2002, and soul and jazz standards on The Dana Owens Album in 2004. Her public identity has been associated with women’s empowerment, self-respect, and a strong Black female presence. The fragrance venture began with an exclusive license between Parlux Fragrances and Queen Latifah Inc., effective May 22, 2008, and Parlux launched the first fragrance under the license in late June 2009. Queen by Queen Latifah was presented that year as her first scent and a signature fragrance developed with Parlux. In 2012, Perfumania Holdings acquired Parlux, which became its wholly owned subsidiary. Her later milestones include the BET Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 and becoming the first female rapper inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2023.
