Fragrance house

Redwood Alchemy

Redwood Alchemy was launched in August 2020 in the Santa Cruz Mountains after founder Wren Machuga lost publishing work when a printing house shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Created by Machuga, who handles fragrance creation and the business personally, the brand takes its name and early creative direction from the surrounding redwood forests. Machuga’s path to perfumery developed through aromatherapy, mentorship by a Michigan herbalist, and interests in memory, chemistry, biology, and emotion. Redwood Alchemy treats scent as story and personal experience, drawing on emotions, landscapes, literature, and philosophy. Its direction has moved from subtle occult undertones toward darker, more esoteric work and, more recently, toward forests, craft, and seasonal change. The earliest listed fragrance editions date to 2020, while the eponymous Redwood Alchemy fragrance launched in 2021. That forest-centered composition includes redwood, cedar, petrichor, tuberose, amber, spices, sandalwood, and vetiver. Blood offers a more experimental register, recreating the metallic, mineral, iron-rich impression of fresh human blood.
