Roberto Capucci

Roberto Capucci launched his fashion house on Rome’s Via Sistina in 1950, presented his first collection in Florence in 1951, and showed at the Sala Bianca in Palazzo Pitti in 1952. He became internationally associated with the Box Line, created in 1958 and described in archival and museum records as a major technical and stylistic innovation. After opening an atelier at 4 Rue Cambon in Paris in 1962, Capucci returned permanently to Italy in 1968, establishing his creative centre on Rome’s Via Gregoriana. His work evolved from couture toward sculptural, experimental clothing; the 1978 Column Dress marked the beginning of his fabric-sculpture phase. In 1980 he resigned from the Italian Chamber of High Fashion and stopped presenting regular official shows, choosing individually selected locations for his collections. The Roberto Capucci Foundation was established in 2005 with Associazione Civita, and Villa Bardini in Florence became its headquarters and museum in 2007. A 2015 ownership change preceded a prêt-à-porter revival, while a 2019 Capucci Roma relaunch translated archival pleats and ruffles into contemporary ready-to-wear. Today, Roberto Capucci Srl is identified as the brand-rights holder for the products and trademarks presented on the brand’s website. Capucci’s fragrance history includes Capucci Pour Homme, recorded as a 1967 chypre, and archival sources identify him as the first Italian couturier asked to lend his name to a perfume.
