Romeo

Romeo Gigli established his namesake label in Milan in 1981, and its first collection followed in 1983. The early identity of Romeo Gigli was expressed through soft romantic draping, cocoon-like silhouettes, muted colors, and asymmetry, offering a less structured alternative to 1980s power dressing. Gigli began showing in Paris for fall 1989, and Vogue recorded a 25-minute standing ovation for the debut. The brand’s first fragrance, Romeo di Romeo Gigli, also launched in 1989; its packaging received the Accademia del Profumo award in 1990 and an American Fragrance Foundation award in 1991. After Eccentric acquired Romeo Gigli from It Holding’s bankruptcy administrators in 2012, Eccentric Srl became the brand’s current owner. From the Spring/Summer 2020 womenswear collection, Alessandro De Benedetti shaped a relaunch through draping, layered ruffles, asymmetric bows, and updated construction that referenced the label’s historical aesthetic.
