Rue21

Rue21 traces its business lineage to Pennsylvania Fashions Inc., founded in 1970, with the corporate predecessor incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1976. After emerging from Chapter 11 proceedings in 2003, Pennsylvania Fashions adopted the rue21 name. The company developed as a specialty apparel retailer serving pre-teens, teenagers, and young adults of all genders, with an emphasis on accessible, trend-responsive fashion and branded merchandise. Rue21 became publicly traded on Nasdaq in 2009 before funds advised by Apax Partners acquired all outstanding shares in 2013, taking the company private. In May 2024, Rue21 entered Chapter 11 again and pursued a sale of its intellectual property and other intangible assets. Toronto-based YM Inc. acquired the Rue21 name and intellectual-property rights through that proceeding, and Rue21 is now listed in YM Inc.’s brand portfolio and continues to operate under its own name. By 2010, the brand also had a full fragrance line for girls and guys, including Pink Ice, launched in 2009, and Twentyone Black, launched in 2010 as its 11th exclusive fragrance.
