RuPaul
RuPaul Andre Charles was born in San Diego in 1960. In the late 1980s, he performed in New York’s downtown club scene and was crowned Queen of Manhattan in August 1989. His long-term creative collaboration with Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato helped build his public career; Bailey and Barbato had founded World of Wonder as a record label before developing entertainment projects with him. Tommy Boy Records signed RuPaul after receiving his demo in 1991, and his 1992 release “Supermodel” reached No. 2 on the Billboard dance-song chart and appeared in runway shows by Isaac Mizrahi and Todd Oldham. In 1994, he became the first drag queen to secure a major makeup deal as the face of M·A·C Cosmetics, followed by The RuPaul Show on VH1. RuPaul’s Drag Race premiered on Logo in 2009, extending his creative identity into television as host, mentor, and executive producer. World of Wonder Productions produced the series, and its trademarks are registered to the company. In November 2013, RuPaul partnered with Colorevolution to launch Glamazon, his first fragrance and cosmetic line and a limited-edition unisex fragrance.
