rykiel

Sonia Rykiel was founded in Paris in 1968, when Sonia Rykiel created Sonia Rykiel CDM and opened the company’s first boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The brand’s public identity was shaped by her knitwear, particularly body-hugging striped “poor boy” sweaters, and by exposed seams, unfinished hems, and removed linings associated with the 1974 “undone” look. The house expanded into children’s wear in 1984, menswear in 1990, accessories and shoes in 1992, and the Sonia/Sonia Rykiel line in 1999. On 25 July 2019, the Paris Commercial Court ordered the immediate judicial liquidation of the company, then owned by First Heritage Brands, the Fung family holding group. G-III Apparel Group agreed to purchase Sonia Rykiel in September 2021 and recorded the acquisition of all issued and outstanding shares in October. G-III now lists the house among its proprietary brands.
