S.T. Dupont
S.T. Dupont began in Paris in 1872, when Simon Tissot Dupont founded a luxury leather-goods workshop. His sons Lucien and André took over in 1919 and moved the workshop to Faverges in Haute-Savoie in 1924, expanding into travel cases; the company was legally constituted as S.T. Dupont in 1934. During World War II, the house entered the lighter business with an aluminium petrol lighter in 1941, later developing the Ligne 1 and Ligne 2 models. Ligne 2 became a recognizable brand marker through its characteristic opening sound and double flame. From the 1970s onward, S.T. Dupont diversified into writing instruments, watches, perfumes, eyewear and ready-to-wear alongside its leather goods and lighters; its 1973 Classique writing instrument is also recorded as a house icon. The house remained family-owned until Gillette acquired it in 1972, and Dickson Concepts agreed to acquire it from Gillette in 1987. In 2021, controlling shareholder D and D International, controlled at the highest level by Dickson Poon, announced a simplified tender offer for the remaining shares. Its identity is organized around master goldsmith, master lacquerer and master trunk-maker craftsmanship within a French art de vivre and travel concept.
