Sally Hansen
Sally Hansen was founded in New York City in 1946 by Sally Hansen, after she left House of Hollywood. Her earlier business career began in 1935, when she acquired her parents’ cosmetics store, La Finné, converted it into House of Hollywood, and took the business national by 1941; that enterprise spanned cosmetics, hair care, and fragrances. The Sally Hansen brand’s first product patent, filed in 1957, covered Hard As Nails, a nail-strengthening treatment, while nail care became the historical center of the brand’s legacy. Sally Hansen, Inc. was sold to Maradel Products in 1962, and Coty brought the brand into its portfolio in 2007 through its acquisition of Del Laboratories’ parent company. In 2014, Coty and the brand began investigating the real Sally Hansen; findings presented publicly in 2017 informed a renewed presentation built around her story, image, and actual signature.
