Schiaparelli

Elsa Schiaparelli established her own fashion company in Paris in 1927, after presenting hand-knitted sweaters with geometric and trompe-l’œil designs. The house grew from sweaters and sportswear into a full clothing line, while its creative identity took shape through Surrealist ideas, wit, trompe-l’œil effects, experimental materials, and collaborations with Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteau. These collaborations produced works including the 1937 Lobster dress and the 1937–38 Shoe Hat. In 1935, the Maison moved its Paris couture salon to 21 Place Vendôme. The salon closed in 1954 after the House declared bankruptcy, although its perfume business continued. Diego Della Valle relaunched the brand in 2006; the salon reopened at Place Vendôme in 2012, and Schiaparelli presented its first haute couture show since 1954 in 2014. The house received official Haute Couture status in 2017. Appointed Creative Director in April 2019, Daniel Roseberry reinterpreted Schiaparelli codes through gold metalwork, upcycled denim, molded leather and metal, and unconventional fabrics. Schiaparelli’s fragrance history includes S, introduced in 1929, and Shocking, launched in 1937 with the Shocking Pink color; the latter was an immediate bestseller for nearly three decades and was called Schiaparelli’s most successful perfume.
