Scotch & Soda
Scotch & Soda was founded in Amsterdam in 1985 by Laurent Hompes as a menswear label, initially known for sporty jackets in bright colours. In 2001, Eric Bijlsma, Joep Krouwels and Patrick Munsters acquired and relaunched the brand, which broadened beyond menswear into womenswear, childrenswear and denim, including Maison Scotch, Scotch Shrunk, Amsterdams Blauw and Scotch R’Belle between 2008 and 2011. Kellwood Co., part of Sun Capital Partners, acquired the brand in 2011. After its Dutch operations filed for bankruptcy on 20 March 2023 amid severe cash-flow problems, Bluestar Alliance acquired the Amsterdam-based brand on 27 March; the trademark is currently owned by S&S Brand Holdings LLC. Its identity is associated with Amsterdam, individuality, authenticity and self-expression, expressed through combinations of classic and contemporary references, colour, print and texture. In fragrance, Barfly, launched in 2010, is identified as the house signature scent, while the I AM SCOTCH & SODA line expanded the range in 2022.
