Sebamed

Sebamed originated in Dr Heinz Maurer’s dermatological work in Bonn during the 1950s, where he developed soap-free cleansing for skin affected by conditions including eczema. In 1967, Maurer founded Sebamat GmbH and launched Sebamed’s first soap-free cleansing bar, establishing a product philosophy centered on cleansing at the skin’s acidic pH of 5.5 rather than with conventional soap. The brand’s identity combines medicinal skin cleansing and care, dermatological research, soap-free formulations, and protection of the skin’s natural barrier. Sebapharma GmbH & Co. KG was established in Boppard in 1983 as the sales company for Sebamat GmbH and related Maurer companies, becoming the parent structure associated with Sebamed. Maurer received Germany’s Order of Merit in 1992, and in 2010 he handed over the running of the company to his son Thomas. In April 2024, Sebamed introduced revised packaging, a revamped logo, and the claim “Science for Healthy Skin Since 1967.”
