Selfridges

Selfridges was founded in 1908 by Harry Gordon Selfridge, whose first store opened on London’s Oxford Street in 1909. From the outset, theatre and customer experience shaped its retail model; in 1910, Selfridges supported the suffragettes by refusing to press charges after window breakages and later created in-store restaurants where women could dine unchaperoned. The business launched selfridges.com in March 2010, introduced Project Earth sustainability targets in 2020, and later evolved them into Reselfridges, focused on repair, refill, recycling and resale. In August 2022, Central Group and Signa Holding completed the acquisition of Selfridges Group from the Weston family. Fragrance has also featured in Selfridges’ history: Harry Gordon Selfridge introduced a ground-floor cosmetics and fragrance hall, while the 2014 Fragrance Lab offered an interactive way to create a personalised scent.
