Founded in 1872 in Ginza, Tokyo, by Arinobu Fukuhara as Japan’s first private Western-style pharmacy, Shiseido entered cosmetics in 1897 with Eudermine. A dedicated cosmetics division and store followed in 1916, the same year its design department was founded. Shiseido Company, Limited was established in 1927 and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. Its creative identity developed through Japanese aesthetics, art and science, and Western influences, shaping the enduring Shiseido style. International expansion began with sales in Taiwan in 1957, followed by Shiseido Cosmetics America in 1965 and an Italian company in 1968. In 2019, Shiseido formulated The Shiseido Philosophy, identifying Japanese aesthetics and art and science as elements of its corporate DNA. In fragrance, Hanatsubaki was introduced in 1917 as the first authentic Japanese-made perfume, using Japanese floral references including camellia.
