Smith & Wesson
Founded in 1852 by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson, Smith & Wesson began with the development of firearms using self-contained cartridges. Its early history includes the Model 1, introduced in 1857 and described as the first practical cartridge revolver, followed by the .38 Military & Police revolver in 1899, now known as the Model 10, which has remained in continuous production since its introduction. The company also developed the .44 Magnum revolver in 1955. Ownership changed when the Wesson family sold Smith & Wesson to Bangor Punta in 1965; after subsequent corporate transfers, Saf-T-Hammer Corporation acquired Smith & Wesson Corp. from Tomkins PLC on May 11, 2001, and renamed itself Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation in February 2002. The holding company became American Outdoor Brands Corporation in 2017, then Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc. in 2020. That August, it completed the spin-off of its outdoor-products business as American Outdoor Brands, Inc., leaving Smith & Wesson Brands as a pure-play firearms company. Its public identity is centered on firearms and related shooting products, including those sold under the Smith & Wesson, M&P, and Gemtech names.
