Sonia Rykiel
Sonia Rykiel was founded in 1968, when Sonia Rykiel opened her first self-named shop on Paris’s Rue de Grenelle. The brand’s early public identity centered on knitwear, exposed inside-out seams, black, lace, sequins, colorful stripes, and pullovers. Nathalie Rykiel began working for the house in 1975 and later became its managing and artistic director, expanding it into children’s wear, a diffusion line, shoes, and accessories. In July 2019, the Paris Commercial Court ordered the immediate judicial liquidation of the company, then held by First Heritage Brands. G-III Apparel Group agreed to purchase Sonia Rykiel in September 2021 and completed the acquisition in October, making the brand a wholly owned operating subsidiary. Its post-acquisition direction honors Sonia Rykiel’s legacy while designing for modern women’s self-expression and individuality. Sonia Rykiel entered fragrance with 7e Sens in 1978, followed by Le Parfum in 1993, Sonia Rykiel in 1997, and Rykiel Homme in 1999.
