SpongeBob Squarepants
SpongeBob SquarePants was created by marine biologist, animator, producer, writer, and director Stephen Hillenburg, who began developing its concepts in 1994 from characters and ideas in The Intertidal Zone. The animated series premiered on July 17, 1999, and the franchise spans television, theatrical films, consumer products, a Broadway musical, digital media, streaming, gaming, music, live experiences, and social media. Hillenburg directed The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004, initially intending it to serve as the series finale; after Nickelodeon requested additional episodes, he resigned as showrunner. He returned for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water in 2015, co-writing its story and serving as executive producer. Today, SpongeBob SquarePants is part of Nickelodeon’s brand portfolio, while Nickelodeon is a division of Paramount, a Skydance Corporation, formed through the August 7, 2025 merger of Skydance Media and Paramount Global.
