Star Trek

Created by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek premiered on NBC on September 8, 1966, after Desilu Productions backed the concept and pilot and NBC approved the series following a second pilot. The original series ended in 1969 after three seasons and 79 episodes, but syndication led to a 1979 feature film and subsequent television and film expansions. Its enduring creative identity is associated with an international, multiracial crew and an idealistic vision of the future that engages with prejudice, civil rights, war, politics, and human rights. Desilu’s 1967 sale to Gulf+Western ultimately brought its library into Paramount Pictures, establishing a continuing relationship between Star Trek and Paramount. In 2019, CBS and Viacom reunited the franchise’s television and film rights through their combination, and in 2025 Skydance Media and Paramount Global merged to create Paramount, a Skydance Corporation.
