Strange Invisible Perfumes
Strange Invisible Perfumes was founded in 2000 by Alexandra Balahoutis after more than four years of studying botanical perfumery. Its name comes from a line in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra describing “a strange invisible perfume” carried from a barge to nearby wharfs. Balahoutis is the house’s founder and botanical perfumer, formulating its fragrances within a botanical essence palette. The brand presents perfumery as intimate aromatic stories and ideas, using natural botanical materials while excluding synthetic aromas, perfume flavorings, and isolates; many materials are hydro-distilled. In 2005, it introduced an 18-fragrance Signature Collection created by Balahoutis. Among its documented fragrance work, L’Invisible is identified as the namesake fragrance of that line, while Perfumes of the Zodiac comprises twelve botanical fragrances representing the signs of the astrological chart. By 2015, Strange Invisible Perfumes was described as a Venice, California-based botanical fragrance house using certified organic, wild-crafted, biodynamic, and hydro-distilled essences.
