Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in Dallas in 1982, honoring a promise to her sister Susan G. Komen. Its founding purpose was to advance breast-cancer research alongside community support, advocacy, and care. The first Race for the Cure followed in Dallas in 1983, drawing 800 participants. In 1991, Komen distributed a pink ribbon to every participant in the New York City Race for the Cure, establishing the ribbon as a national symbol for the breast-cancer cause. During its 25th anniversary in 2007, the organization changed its name to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and introduced its own pink-ribbon identity. In 2010, it partnered with TPR Holdings to develop Promise Me, described as the first and only proprietary fragrance developed with the organization, with a planned April 2011 launch; Komen addressed the product in October 2011 as part of its cause-marketing programs. The organization is currently presented officially as Susan G. Komen, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
