Swarovski
Swarovski was established in Austria in 1895 by Daniel Swarovski, who developed an electric-powered crystal-cutting machine after becoming interested in industrial electricity. The company was established in Wattens, Tyrol, where hydroelectric power supported crystal production, and its first corporate incarnation was D. Swarovski & Co. In 1900, Daniel Swarovski created an original lexicon of crystal cuts, including Articles 1–6, which were put into production in Wattens. In the 1950s, Swarovski developed the Aurora Borealis crystal effect, later used by Christian Dior in a 1957 collection. A crystal mouse made from spare chandelier parts became Swarovski’s first figurine and was sold at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. The company introduced its first jewelry line in 1977 and a Paris couture range in 1989, then opened the crystal-centered multimedia site Kristallwelten in 1995. Swarovski remains family-owned. In 2020, Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert became its first company-wide creative director; her Collection I drew on Daniel Swarovski’s designs, and in 2021 the brand introduced a revised Swan logo and visual identity. In December 2024, Swarovski and Coty announced a long-term agreement for fragrance and beauty products, with the first Coty fragrance planned for 2026.
