Tabac

Tabac’s parent company, Mäurer & Wirtz, was founded in 1845 in Stolberg near Aachen by Michael Mäurer and his stepson Andreas August Wirtz as a soapworks. Tabac’s fragrance history began in June 1951 with a soap made for male customers; “Original” was added to the name in October 1952 to distinguish it from imitations. In 1959, Tabac Original expanded into aftershave lotion, pre-electric shave, and eau de cologne. Its core identity is a tart, spicy-fresh, traditionally masculine fragrance. Tabac Original Eau de Toilette followed in 1990, extending the aftershave-centered line into a stronger fragrance expression. A 2014 redesign modernized the visual identity while retaining the amphora-shaped bottle and traditional composition. In 2019, Tabac introduced Original Craftsman, a fresher interpretation of the heritage line. Tabac is an own brand of Mäurer & Wirtz, an independent subsidiary of the Dalli Group, whose wider companies remain fully owned by the Wirtz family. By 2019, more than 85 million bottles of the 1959 classic had been sold.
