Tanya Sarne

Tanya Sarne is the founder of Ghost, the British fashion label established in London in 1984 with Katharine Hamnett. Before Ghost, she co-created the UK sportswear range Miz in 1978 and sold her share in 1983. Ghost’s design language combined bias cuts, asymmetry and specially treated viscose that created a crinkled vintage-crepe effect, with clothes designed to be easy to wear and care for. Sarne supervised in-house and guest designers, a method echoed in the name’s reference to ghostwriting. By its 20th anniversary in 2004, Ghost was internationally recognized for ultra-feminine clothing intended to fit and flatter a wide range of shapes and ages. Controlling interest was sold to Kevin Sanford and Arev in December 2005, and Sarne left the company in 2006. She launched Handwritten in 2007; it continued some Ghost-related ideas before folding in 2013. Ghost entered fragrance in 2000 with Ghost The Fragrance, created by Michel Almairac and a bestseller. In 2012, Designer Parfums agreed to acquire Ghost’s fine-fragrance business from P&G Prestige. In 2025, the fragrance business underwent a rebrand after two years of research and development.
